What are Language Learning Disorders?

Language learning disorders are comprised of a variety of challenges in verbal expression, information processing, reading and writing. Conditions included in this group are dyslexia, dysgraphia and other literacy-based difficulties. While these conditions are often identified in childhood, they can also persist into adulthood.

What are the effects?

Language is how we learn about and navigate our world. When we have challenges with language learning, it can make it difficult to learn successfully at school, manage everyday language tasks such as paying bills, sustain social relationships and achieve success at work.

How we can help

At Beyond Words Speech-Language Pathology, we believe that effective language/literacy therapy must have two broad aims: to support your current abilities in everyday activities and to improve those abilities, where possible, for the future. A therapy plan will be designed to support your specific learning style while identifying areas of strength and need. This plan may include strengthening phonological awareness, vocabulary knowledge and the decoding of written words. We can examine where assistive technology can support and improve your language and literacy skills.

While many students have access to assistive technology at school, the training available for these programs is often limited. As a result, students become very frustrated by these tools and no longer see the value of their use. Our clinicians teach students how to use this technology which reduces frustration and allows students to more fully participate in the school curriculum.
