What is Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by movement-related symptoms such as tremor, muscle rigidity, stiffness, slowness of movement and impaired balance. Given that speech, voice and swallowing all rely on movement they can also be affected.

What are the effects?

Parkinson’s disease reduces your ability to be understood. You may experience a quiet voice, an inability to control how fast you talk and slurred speech. You may have a reduced ability to change your facial expression.

Eating and drinking may also be difficult. Changes in sensory feedback (how you sense a problem) may mean that you are not aware of your swallowing difficulties. If you or your family notice any of the following symptoms during mealtimes, an evaluation by a Speech-Language Pathologist should be completed:

How we can help

At Beyond Words Speech-Language Pathology, we recognize the unpredictable nature of Parkinson’s. We will see you in your home to assess your voice, speech and/or swallowing function. Techniques such as vocal function exercises may be used as we strive to increase your vocal effort. To allow you to participate more fully in conversations with others, exercises and strategies may be recommended to improve and maintain the clarity of your speech. We can teach you how to compensate for poor swallowing function so you can more safely participate in mealtimes with family and friends.
