What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system which includes brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks the myelin which is a protective covering wrapped around the nerves of the central nervous system. Multiple sclerosis can occur at any age but is usually diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40.

What are the effects?

Speech, swallowing and cognition (thinking) can be affected.

It is common with MS to have variability in your symptoms through the day and over time. This is also true of your speech, swallowing and cognition symptoms.

How we can help

At Beyond Words Speech-Language Pathology, we recognize that the speech and cognition symptoms of multiple sclerosis can affect how you function on a daily basis and connect with your world. We will work with you to improve and then maintain the quality of your voice and clarity of your speech. The treatment plan may include vocal function exercises and overarticulation and sound placement techniques. Practical strategies will allow you to function optimally in terms of your thinking and communication skills. We can teach you how to compensate for poor swallowing so you can more safely participate in mealtimes with family and friends.
